What is a knitting row counter?

A knitting or crochet row counter helps you keep your place in a pattern by recording completed rows or rounds. A stitch counter tracks progress inside the current row or round, so CountMetrik keeps both values together while letting you check and correct them independently.

When to use Next Row

Press Next Row after finishing the current row or round. CountMetrik saves the current stitch count and target, advances the row, applies the selected next-row behavior, and recalculates repeat progress. If a note is attached to the next row, it can appear as a reminder.

Keep the project position clear

Use the row value for completed rows or rounds and the stitch value for the current unit. Undo restores the complete Next Row action.

Use targets only when helpful

Add row or stitch targets when a pattern gives you a total worth checking; targets show progress without changing the count.

Add repeats and notes

Repeat tracking shows the current position. Notes can remind you about increases, decreases, joins, or color changes on a row.

Finish a row in one step

Turn on “Finish row and prepare the next one” when Next Row should save the stitch count and prepare the following row. Leave it off when row and stitch totals need independent corrections.

Separate projects keep notes, history, targets, and completion state from becoming mixed together.

Projects and reminders stay together

Notes are attached to specific rows and can appear when the project reaches that row. Completing a project pauses counting; archiving removes it from the active list without deleting it.

Saved locally and available offline

Row projects, notes, and history are stored separately from other counters on this device. After the first successful load, counting and project switching can continue offline. Export a backup before clearing storage or changing devices.

Row Counter frequently asked questions

When should I press Next Row?+

Press Next Row after you finish the current row or round. It saves that row’s stitch count and target, advances the project row by one, applies the configured next-row stitch and target behavior, recalculates repeats, and can show the next row’s note reminder.

What is the difference between the Row count and Stitch count?+

Row count is the project’s current row or round position. Stitch count is the number inside that current row; changing stitches does not advance the row unless the finish-row workflow is on and you press Next Row.

Can Next Row finish the whole row in one step?+

Yes. Turn on Finish row and prepare the next one in Settings. Next Row then saves the current stitches, advances the row, applies the next-row choices, and keeps the whole action undoable. Turn it off when rows and stitches should change independently.

How does Repeat Tracker calculate progress?+

Choose a repeat length in rows or stitches. The tracker shows the current position within that repeat and completed repeats; an exact multiple completes the current repeat before the next action starts at position one.

How do I correct a row or stitch counted by mistake?+

Use Undo to reverse the most recent row or stitch operation. For a known final value, open Row & stitch settings and edit the current row or stitches directly; the row history remains explicit rather than silently changing.

Can I switch between multiple projects without losing progress?+

Yes. Each project keeps its own current row, stitches, targets, repeats, notes, and history. Switching projects changes the active project without merging their data.
